Groups can be used to create small discussions, to limit dropbox submissions, and to restrict access to content (homework, cases, etc.). The latest version of D2L (10.6) includes some new options for Groups:
Student Self Enrollment
Allows students to enroll in the group of their choosing. Why use this? This allows students some agency based on interest, connections, etc. You can set up a specific number of groups, groups of a specific number of students, or a specific number of groups with a specified capacity. Options include setting an Expiry Date. Students can join and leave groups until that date. After the expiration date, existing group enrollment is locked. You also have the option to auto-enroll those students who didn’t join a group prior to the expiration date.
Also new in v10.6 is the Group Prefix, which allows for more specific naming of groups. It is available regardless of the type of enrollment used. The text you enter in the Group Prefix text box will name the groups. For example, if you students are working on an investment project, you might type Investment group as the Group Prefix. Groups in the Discussion area, then, would look like this:
Just a reminder: When you’re setting up groups is the perfect time to also set up related discussion areas, lockers or dropbox folders. This can save you a lot of time and keystrokes.
